Who am I?

Hello! I’m Julia Barber. I am a member of  the Hampshire Dyslexia Association Committee. Having relocated to Lymington in the New Forest from Buckinghamshire three years ago, I run Julia’s Learning Cabin from home. We have just built my learning cabin and hope to work from there soon!

I am Dyslexic who was diagnosed in the early 70’s, and had some amazing teachers during my school years.  After I left school I trained as a Montessori Nursery Teacher and loved teaching nursery up to Year 1. When my eldest was diagnosed at Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre (HADC) as Dyslexic, it gave me the opportunity to do what I had always dreamed of and train to be a Specific Learning Difficulties Teacher.

I went on to train at HADC and became a SpLD teacher and worked at a leading independent school in Hertfordshire. Currently I tutor from home. I am continuing to develop my knowledge and I am studying Dyscalculia in greater depth.I also work with ‘Empowering Learning’ to support learners with their visual and grounding skills. My next challenge is to start a Touch-Typing Club.

Outside of this I enjoy sailing, scuba diving, needlework, Upholstery, cookery and entertaining. I am looking forward to assisting HDA and supporting local families on their journey.
